Here are the http://demeter.univ-lyon2.fr:8080/sdx/theses/lyon2/2005/plailly_j or Files/Manuscrit-Final.pdf French versions of my dissertation.\n\nAbstract:\n*Human olfactory memory: Functional neuroanatomy of discrimination and familiarity judgment\n**This dissertation deals with the neural bases of olfactory memory processes, in healthy subject and patient with schizophrenia, using cerebral imaging techniques of PET and fMRI. The first study shows that odor discrimination, involving short-term memory processes, activates the left ventral insular and frontopolar gyri, which are suggested to be respectively involved in the evaluation of perceptual characteristics of odorants and plurimodal working memory processes. The second study shows the activation of the right piriform cortex in odor familiarity processing, suggesting thus the involvement of the primary olfactory cortex in olfactory long-term memory processes. The third study aims at dissociating the neural correlates of the familiarity and unfamiliarity feeling of odors and music. It shows that the feeling of familiarity activates a widely extended bimodal neural network involving memory or semantic brain regions. It therefore suggests the existence of a plurimodal neural network of the feeling of familiarity. The fourth study shows that patients with schizophrenia judge odors less familiar and pleasant odors less pleasant than healthy comparison subjects. These behavioral deficits are related to functional deficits in left temporo-limbic and orbital regions. In summary, this dissertation suggests a dissociation between the neural bases of olfactory short-term and long term memory and gives support to the multimodal nature of a part of memory processes.\n**Keywords: Olfaction, Discrimination, Familiarity, TEP, fMRI\n

I study how the human brain analysed olfactory information with different emotional values, during different memory process and depending on the attentional context. \n*2008-2009 I am currently working as a post-doctoral fellow at the laboratoire http://olfac.univ-lyon1.fr/ UMR 5020 http://www.cnrs.fr/-http://www.univ-lyon1.fr/, into the "Perception Emotion et Cognition Olfactive" team.
